Two weeks ago, heavy rains finally extinguished a massive fire front that destroyed eighty percent of the Blue Mountains World Heritage area. This summer, bushfires powerful enough to generate their own electrical storm systems burnt through a fifth of Australia’s forests, killing an estimated 1.25 billion nonhuman animals and obliterating the homes of at least a hundred already threatened species. The rains had caused a minor landslide on our train line and followed me as lively creeks and waterfalls along a path which once led to buried fire hearths many thousands of years old. So clouds join other ghosts asking to be heard.
